Óscar Romero, Archbishop and Martyr, 1980, and the Martyrs of El Salvador
Today we commemorate Archbishop Óscar Romero, assassinated while celebrating the Eucharist after calling on soldiers to stop killing their own people. Inspired by the poor and his martyred friend Rutilio Grande, Romero became a prophetic voice in El Salvador’s brutal civil conflict. We also remember the women and men martyred for their witness—missionaries, priests, and laypeople who stood with the oppressed and paid with their lives.
