SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday Supper & Service
DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday\nJust as I have loved you\, you should also love one another. \nMaundy Thursday in the Episcopal tradition is the Thursday of Holy Week commemorating the Last Supper\, where Jesus instituted the Eucharist and washed his disciples’ feet\, giving the “new commandment: to love one another. \nWe will join together for a meal beginning at 5:30\, followed by a service of Holy Eucharist at 6:45\, which will include foot washing and the solemn stripping of the altar.

SUMMARY:Tenebrae
DESCRIPTION:This service will be held in the Chapel of Holy Communion – accessible through memorial garden. \nThe name Tenebrae comes from the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows.” A distinguishing characteristic of this service is the series of readings from Lamentations which appear early in the office. The distinctive ceremonial of Tenebrae includes use of fifteen lighted candles\, often set on a special\, triangular stand. One candle is extinguished as each of the fourteen appointed psalms is completed. The fifteenth candle\, symbolic of Christ\, is left lighted at the end of the final psalm. But it is carried away to be hidden\, which signifies the apparent victory of the forces of evil. A sudden loud noise is made at the end of the service\, symbolizing the earthquake at Christ’s death. The lighted candle is then restored to its place\, suggesting Christ’s eventual triumph.

SUMMARY:Midday Mass
DESCRIPTION:Óscar Romero\, Archbishop and Martyr\, 1980\, and the Martyrs of El Salvador\nToday we commemorate Archbishop Óscar Romero\, assassinated while celebrating the Eucharist after calling on soldiers to stop killing their own people. Inspired by the poor and his martyred friend Rutilio Grande\, Romero became a prophetic voice in El Salvador’s brutal civil conflict. We also remember the women and men martyred for their witness—missionaries\, priests\, and laypeople who stood with the oppressed and paid with their lives.
